Methacrylated Sodium Hyaluronate

Methacrylated sodium hyaluronate is a chemically modified hyaluronan. The methacrylate functional group is added to the primary hydroxyl group via a reaction with methacrylic acid anhydride under aqueous conditions. The methacrylate group allows photo crosslinking via UV-induced polymerization for the creation of spatially controlled biological scaffolding and 3D bioprinting. Additional functionality includes the chemical conjugation with substances via thiol-ene crosslinking.
Scaffoldings created using methacrylated hyaluronic acid have a wide range of physical properties depending on the degree of substitution (DOS) percentage of the methacrylate functional group, the molecular weight of the hyaluronic acid, and the concentration of the methacrylated hyaluronic acid solution. Lifecore’s reaction control processes, techniques, and technologies allow us to create methacrylated hyaluronic acid with tailored and customizable DOS to fit your specific research and development needs.

Optimizing your Hydrogel

Methacrylated sodium hyaluronate’s functionality is executable under physiologic conditions, allowing for the direct inclusion of cells or bioactive agents after photo polymerization or thiol-ene conjugation. Much of the native sodium hyaluronate structure and behavior can be maintained allowing your crosslinked structures to maintain cell and tissue viability.
With a fully customizable DOS and molecular weight package, Lifecore may provide any form of methacrylated hyaluronic acid to meet your project goals. Our internal quality systems and CDMO process development team allow us to internally scale your project towards a GMP-ready state once your specific, desired properties have been adequately researched and developed. Off the shelf, research-grade methacrylic hyaluronic acid offerings at various degrees of substitutions are listed below to get your project’s research started. Please contact us for customized methacrylated sodium hyaluronate.
